What Capital-Based Risk Means
Capital-based risk means determining the amount you are
willing to lose on a trade according to the amount of
capital available in your trading account.
Instead of choosing an arbitrary dollar amount for every
trade, your risk is connected to your account size. This
allows the risk to adjust as your account changes while
keeping your risk framework consistent.
The objective is not to avoid losses completely. Losses
are a normal part of trading. The objective is to make
sure that individual losses remain controlled enough to
allow the trading plan to continue operating over a
series of trades.
Recommended Risk Percentage
There is no single risk percentage that is appropriate
for every trader, strategy, account type, or market.
Risk should be selected according to your strategy,
drawdown tolerance, trading frequency and account
objectives.
For educational purposes, many traders choose a relatively
small percentage of account capital per trade rather than
putting a large portion of the account at risk on a single
position.
For example, a trader may establish a rule such as 0.5%,
1%, or another predefined percentage and apply that rule
consistently rather than changing risk emotionally from
trade to trade.
The important principle is not simply choosing a number.
The important principle is defining your risk before the
trade and respecting it after the trade begins.
Why Risk Should Be Based on Account Size
Your account size represents the capital available to
support your trading activity. As that capital changes,
the amount you can reasonably risk should also be
considered.
For example, risking $20 on a $1,000 account represents
a very different level of exposure from risking $20 on a
$10,000 account.
Using a percentage helps create a consistent relationship
between your account and your risk.
This also prevents the common mistake of treating every
trade as if the account were the same size regardless of
previous profits or losses.
Capital-based risk therefore creates a framework where
your position risk responds to the capital available
rather than being driven by emotion.
How to Calculate the Dollar Amount at Risk
The basic calculation is:
Risk Amount = Account Capital × Risk Percentage
For example, if an account contains $2,000 and the trader
chooses to risk 1%:
$2,000 × 0.01 = $20
The maximum planned loss for that trade would therefore
be $20 before considering trading costs such as spread,
commission or slippage.
This amount is then used together with the stop-loss
distance and the value of the instrument to determine
the appropriate position size.
Examples for Different Account Sizes
The same percentage produces different dollar risk as
account capital changes.
$500 account at 1%: $5 risk
$1,000 account at 1%: $10 risk
$2,500 account at 1%: $25 risk
$5,000 account at 1%: $50 risk
$10,000 account at 1%: $100 risk
These examples demonstrate the principle of percentage-
based risk. The actual percentage you choose should be
appropriate for your own trading plan and account
objectives.
Why Increasing Risk After Losses Is Dangerous
Increasing risk because of a recent loss can turn a normal
losing period into a much larger drawdown.
A common mistake is attempting to recover a loss quickly
by increasing position size. This changes the original
risk plan and can create even larger losses.
For example, if a trader normally risks 1% but increases
risk after losing in an attempt to recover the account,
the next loss can have a much greater impact than the
original loss.
Risk should therefore be determined before the trade,
not increased because of frustration, urgency or the
desire to recover money quickly.
How to Keep Risk Consistent
Consistency begins with having a predefined risk rule.
The trader should know the maximum amount they are
prepared to risk before entering a trade.
That risk should then be translated into an appropriate
position size according to the stop-loss distance and
instrument value.
Keeping risk consistent also means avoiding larger
positions simply because a trade looks particularly
convincing.
A strong setup does not remove market uncertainty.
Your risk-management rules should remain active even
when your confidence is high.
Practical Rules for Applying Capital-Based Risk
Define your maximum risk before entering the trade.
Base your risk amount on your available trading capital.
Use a predefined risk percentage rather than an emotional
dollar amount.
Calculate position size from your risk amount and stop-loss
distance.
Do not increase risk simply because you experienced a loss.
Do not increase risk simply because you are confident in a
trade.
Keep your risk framework consistent across your trading
process.
Review your risk rules periodically and adjust them only
as part of a deliberate trading plan.

What Money Management Means
Money management is the process of controlling how trading
capital is allocated, protected and used throughout the
trading process.
It goes beyond deciding how much to risk on one trade.
It considers how individual trades, multiple positions,
profits, losses, withdrawals and account growth affect
the overall trading account.
A trader can have a good strategy and still damage an
account through poor money management. The purpose of
money management is to make sure that trading decisions
do not expose the account to unnecessary financial risk.
Capital Preservation
Capital preservation means protecting enough trading
capital to remain capable of executing your strategy
after a series of losses.
The first responsibility of a trading account is not
maximum growth. It is survival.
If losses become large enough, the account may require
an unrealistic percentage gain simply to recover.
For example, losing 50% of an account requires a 100%
gain on the remaining capital just to return to the
starting balance.
Controlled risk helps prevent individual losses and
drawdowns from becoming unnecessarily destructive.
Risk Allocation
Risk allocation means deciding how much of your available
capital can be exposed to individual trades or groups of
trades.
Your risk should be considered not only on a single-trade
basis but also across positions that may be affected by
the same market event.
For example, several positions that are strongly correlated
may create much more combined exposure than the individual
risk of each trade suggests.
A disciplined trader therefore considers total exposure
before adding another position.
Managing Winning and Losing Periods
Winning periods can create overconfidence, while losing
periods can create frustration and the desire to recover
money quickly.
Both situations can cause a trader to abandon the original
money-management plan.
During a winning period, increasing risk simply because
the account is performing well can increase exposure at
the wrong time.
During a losing period, increasing risk to recover losses
can accelerate the drawdown.
A structured money-management plan should remain stable
during both winning and losing periods.
Avoiding Overexposure
Overexposure occurs when too much of the trading account
is vulnerable to market losses at the same time.

correlated.
More trades do not automatically mean more opportunity.

Before adding another position, consider how the new trade
changes the total exposure of the account.

risk.
A trader should have a clear plan for what happens when
the account reaches a profitable level.

reducing exposure during certain conditions, or following

My Story
My journey in trading taught me that having a strategy is only part of becoming a consistent trader.
Through my own experience in the market, I began to recognize how emotions, decision-making, discipline and behavior can influence the way a trader executes a strategy. I realized that many traders do not struggle because they lack information, but because they struggle to consistently apply what they already know.
This understanding led to the development of Doctor of Psychologicals — a platform focused on the psychological and behavioral side of trading.
Today, the goal is to help traders understand themselves better, identify the behaviors holding them back, and develop the mental and behavioral structure required for more disciplined execution.
My Philosophy
I believe that a trader can have a good strategy and still struggle if their behavior does not support the strategy.
Trading requires more than technical knowledge. It requires discipline, emotional control, patience, self-awareness and the ability to follow a defined plan under pressure.
